The glowsticks ( sometimes referred to as lightsticks) are made up of an outer plastic container, which contains solution B, and an inner container which contains solution A ( see drawing ). To activate the glowstick just bend the product lightly, which breaks the inner container allowing the two solutions to mix, a chemical reaction occurs, and the light is generated , then shake the glowstick several times to help the solutions to mix thoroughly. As the plastic outer has an air-tight seal, the solutions will not leak out, and the glowsticks light up without a spark or burning, and can therefore be used in hazardous areas without the fear of igniting. They can be used in mining, caving and even under water, as well as firework displays, parties, concerts and other events.
